Memorial Day is federal holiday where we honor the men and women who bravely served in our military and fought for our country. It's also the official start of the summer beach season at the Jersey shore. Anyone who vacations at the Jersey shore knows the. Big traffic jams on the Garden State Parkway going south on Friday night and Saturday morning and going north on Sunday afternoon. It's like that all summer long from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Despite it's size, New Jersey has one of the longest shore lines of any state in the country, offering an abundance of beach choices for weekenders and day trippers. If you are going to brave the traffic and the crowds and head to the Jersey shore this summer, here are some events you may consider attending.
Summer events at the Jersey Shore: Wildwood's Memorial Day Weekend International Kite Festival
People take their kites seriously and they take them to one of the Jersey shore's southern most beaches. The Wildwood International Kite Festival attracts kite flyers from all over the world for this four day event, beginning on Friday May 22 and ending on Monday May 25. Attendees can learn how to fly a kite and even participate in competition. By the way, unlike most of the Jersey shore, Wildwood's beach is free!
Summer Events at the Jersey Shore: Ocean City Boardwalk Spring Family Fun Fest
If the Memorial Day Weekend is too crowded for you, wait a week at head to Ocean City for the Boardwalk Spring Family Fun Fest. Taking place on Saturday May 30th and Sunday 31st, catch crafters, pony rides, face painting and much more family entertainment.
Summer Events at the Jersey Shore: The 23rd Annual New Jersey Seafood Festival in Belmar
What's a day at the Jersey Shore without some seafood? On Saturday June 13th and Sunday 14th, head to Belmar sampling of some of the best seafood in South Jersey. Crab cakes, lobster, fried shrimp, oysters, clams…you name it. In addition to food, look for crafters, vendors, and a 'wine tent' for adults. And be prepared cause it does get crowded and tough to find a place to sit and chow down your chowder.
Summer Events at the Jersey Shore: Thunder Over The Boardwalk in Atlantic City.
On Wednesday August 19th, see military and civilian pilots perform a heart pounding air show over the beach in Atlantic City. They usually do practice moves the day before, so you can get two days worth of shows out of this one event. It's free to watch and, from my personal experience, a good spot to watch it from is 3rd floor deck of the Pier Shops at Caesar's Palace.
